My Story Exercise
Summer of 2001:  I grew tomatoes from seeds.  Began them indoors in the Spring.  Hardened them on the patio, but not too much.  Tilled the soil, and added manure (which I later found out was too high salt for tomato plants).  Planted them in ideal sun.  Tended them with tomato Miracle Gro, pulled weeds gently, watered regularly.  When fruits appeared, they had BER!  I'd never heard of it.  After all of my care, I was extremely disappointed.

I read articles on BER.  They all said that soil nutrients were important. But tilling the soil to add nutrients once BER was evident, would further damage the roots.  I tried to add calcium (one article said to add powdered milk to the soil). But it didn't help.  When extra care-and-maintenance did not stop BER, this revealed that my problem was with the initial soil prep.  Next year I will do better!  Return to Unit 1
